Protecting Yourself: Navigating Privacy and Safety in the Digital Age

January 3, 2025

I’ve spent over a decade working to protect my clients’ privacy and give them control back after being subjected to sexual misconduct and harassment.

When something like this happens to you, it’s normal to feel alone and afraid. That’s where I come in.

My clients experience significant relief and freedom because they know I’m there to brainstorm the next step, Google their name to make sure nothing unwanted pops up, and do the mental and emotional work for them so they can focus on school, work, and life.

Let me do the stressful work for you – so you can get back to living your life.

Hi, I'm Lindsay.

In our hyperconnected world, technology has transformed how we build relationships. Dating apps, social media, and even sexting have become not only common but also normalized components of modern relationships. They allow us to connect in ways unimaginable two decades ago—forming bonds across distances, strengthening intimacy, and sharing parts of our lives in an instant.

However, this digital intimacy comes with risks. Privacy violations, abuse, and exploitation have become alarmingly prevalent in the online realm. For victims, the emotional and psychological toll of these violations can be profound, leaving lasting scars.

Despite these challenges, there are steps we can take to protect ourselves, our relationships, and our digital presence. Here are five essential strategies for safeguarding your privacy and safety in the digital age.

1. Understand Consent and Privacy

Consent is the foundation of trust, both online and offline. It’s essential to ensure that any sharing of personal or intimate content is mutually agreed upon. Open communication about boundaries—what you’re comfortable sharing and what you’re not—is key to establishing respect in any relationship.

Discuss the potential risks of sharing sensitive content with your partner. While conversations about privacy might feel awkward at first, they’re necessary. Setting clear boundaries helps prevent misunderstandings and empowers both parties to make informed decisions.

Remember, consent is ongoing. Just because content has been shared once doesn’t mean it can be shared again or with others without explicit permission.

2. Be Mindful of Digital Privacy

While it’s tempting to share personal moments with trusted partners, it’s crucial to think about the long-term implications. Once a photo, video, or message is shared, it may no longer be fully within your control. Even in the most secure relationships, data breaches, hacking, or unintended sharing can expose your private content to others.

To minimize risks:

  • Avoid sharing intimate content if you’re unsure about the security of your devices or the platform you’re using.
  • Use apps or platforms with strong encryption and privacy protections.
  • Regularly review privacy settings on your social media accounts to control who can see your posts and personal information.

When in doubt, err on the side of caution. Protecting your privacy today can prevent significant emotional and legal consequences in the future.

3. Secure Your Devices

Your digital safety begins with the tools you use every day. Weak passwords, outdated software, or unsecured devices can leave you vulnerable to cyberattacks or unauthorized access.

Here are some tips to strengthen your digital security:

  • Use strong, unique passwords for each account. Consider a password manager to keep track of them.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for an extra layer of security on sensitive accounts.
  • Keep your devices and apps updated to patch security vulnerabilities.
  • Be cautious about connecting to public Wi-Fi networks, which are often unsecured.

These steps may seem small, but they can make a significant difference in protecting your personal information and digital content.

4. Know Your Rights

Understanding your legal rights is a powerful tool for protecting yourself and responding to violations. Laws surrounding privacy, consent, and the sharing of intimate content vary by state, but many jurisdictions now have strong protections against non-consensual distribution of intimate material (commonly referred to as “revenge porn”).

If your privacy has been violated:

  • Document everything. Save screenshots, messages, or any evidence of the violation.
  • Report the incident to the platform where it occurred. Many have policies against abuse and mechanisms for removing harmful content.
  • Consult with an attorney who specializes in victims’ rights. Acting quickly can open up more legal options and prevent further harm.

Familiarizing yourself with the resources and laws available to you can make a daunting situation more manageable.

5. Trust Your Instincts and Seek Support

If something feels off in a relationship or interaction—whether it’s pressure to share intimate content, controlling behavior, or disregard for your boundaries—listen to your instincts. Coercion, manipulation, or subtle threats are red flags that should not be ignored.

Support is available, even if you feel isolated or unsure about how to proceed. Friends, family members, counselors, and legal professionals can provide guidance and assistance. Additionally, many organizations specialize in helping victims of online abuse and privacy violations.

Remember, reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness. It’s a step toward reclaiming your safety and peace of mind.

Building a Safer Digital Future

The digital age has opened new doors for connection and self-expression, but it has also brought unique challenges. By taking proactive measures—understanding consent, securing your devices, and staying informed—you can protect yourself and reduce the risks of harm.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of online abuse or exploitation, know that you are not alone. There are people and resources ready to help. As a victims’ rights attorney, I am dedicated to supporting survivors and advocating for a safer digital environment for everyone.

Let’s work together to create a world where privacy is respected, boundaries are honored, and safety is prioritized.
