Domestic Violence and It Ends with Us: The Importance of Trauma-Informed Lawyering

August 29, 2024

I’ve spent over a decade working to protect my clients’ privacy and give them control back after being subjected to sexual misconduct and harassment.

When something like this happens to you, it’s normal to feel alone and afraid. That’s where I come in.

My clients experience significant relief and freedom because they know I’m there to brainstorm the next step, Google their name to make sure nothing unwanted pops up, and do the mental and emotional work for them so they can focus on school, work, and life.

Let me do the stressful work for you – so you can get back to living your life.

Hi, I'm Lindsay.

Domestic violence is a multifaceted and complex issue that often leaves victims feeling trapped, unheard, and alone. The popular novel It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover has brought this topic into mainstream conversation, shedding light on the challenges victims face and the emotional intricacies that accompany abusive relationships. Now, with the book’s adaptation into a film, the conversation has expanded to a wider audience, albeit not without controversy. As a trauma-informed lawyer, I recognize the significance of this story in helping to bridge the gap between public perception and the real experiences of those who have suffered from domestic violence.

The Layers of Domestic Violence

Domestic violence isn’t just about physical harm; it’s an intricate web of emotional, psychological, financial, and sometimes sexual abuse. Abusers often manipulate, isolate, and control their victims, creating an environment where leaving can seem impossible. The cycle of abuse is perpetuated by a combination of fear, love, hope, and often, financial dependency. Many victims stay in abusive relationships because they believe their partner will change, because they are scared of the consequences of leaving, or because they have nowhere else to go.

It Ends with Us captures these complexities through the story of Lily Bloom (played by Blake Lively in the film), a woman who finds herself in an abusive relationship despite her best intentions and a deep desire to break the cycle of violence. The novel paints a vivid picture of how difficult it can be to leave an abuser, especially when love and fear are intertwined. It also highlights the stigma that often surrounds victims, leading to feelings of shame and guilt that further entrap them.

The Role of a Trauma-Informed Lawyer

As a lawyer who specializes in supporting victims of domestic and sexual violence, it’s crucial to approach each case with a trauma-informed perspective. This means recognizing the psychological impact of trauma on a victim’s behavior, decision-making, and ability to engage with the legal process. Trauma-informed lawyering goes beyond legal representation; it’s about offering empathy, understanding, and a safe space for victims to share their stories without judgment.

A trauma-informed approach involves:

  • Building Trust: Many victims have been betrayed by those closest to them, making it difficult for them to trust others, including their legal advocates. Establishing a relationship built on trust is essential for effective representation.
  • Empowering Victims: It’s important to give victims control over their legal decisions, ensuring they feel empowered rather than further disempowered by the legal process. This includes providing clear, jargon-free explanations of their options and respecting their choices.
  • Understanding Trauma Responses: Victims may exhibit behaviors that seem counterintuitive, such as returning to their abuser or being reluctant to pursue legal action. These responses are often rooted in trauma, and it’s important to approach them with sensitivity and without judgment.
  • Providing Holistic Support: Legal issues are often just one aspect of what a victim is dealing with. Trauma-informed lawyers should connect clients with resources such as counseling, financial assistance, and safe housing, helping them address the broader impacts of domestic violence.

The Impact of It Ends with Us in Media

It Ends with Us has resonated with many readers because it provides an honest, unflinching look at the reality of domestic violence. With its adaptation into a film, the story has the potential to reach an even larger audience, sparking important conversations about abusive relationships and the struggles victims face. However, the film has not been without its controversies, particularly around how it has been promoted.

Some critics have expressed concern over the way the film’s marketing may have inadvertently glamorized or trivialized the serious issues at the heart of the story. This tension highlights the challenges of bringing such a sensitive and complex topic to the screen in a way that is both respectful and impactful.

For many viewers, the film may be their first encounter with the realities of domestic violence, offering a new perspective on the often-hidden struggles victims endure. It presents an opportunity to raise awareness and foster understanding—both critical steps toward societal change. While it’s encouraging to see these conversations gaining visibility, it’s equally important to approach such portrayals with care and sensitivity to ensure they resonate with the complexity and gravity the issue deserves.

The Importance of Compassionate Advocacy

Domestic violence cases are never straightforward, and each victim’s experience is unique. As a trauma-informed lawyer, my goal is to provide legal support that acknowledges and respects the complexities of each individual’s journey. By doing so, I hope to empower victims to reclaim their lives and break the cycle of violence, just as Lily Bloom strives to do in It Ends with Us.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, know that help is available. You are not alone, and there are resources and advocates ready to support you in finding safety and healing.
